Jason’s expressive oil compositions are evocative and dramatic.
Jason Cordingley is an Edinburgh-based painter and art educator whose vibrant cityscapes blend architectural wonders with the vitality of nature. After graduating with a BA Honours degree in Art in 1990, he completed an MA in Art Education from the Institute of Education, University of London in 1994, while maintaining his practice in both painting and sculpture. His distinctive work has been exhibited throughout Scotland and beyond, with pieces collected internationally.
Cordingley's Unique Technique
Developing his stylistic approach to landscape painting over the past thirty years, Jason employs multiple layers of oil paint thickeners and glazes to create textured depth of several centimetres on canvas. This technique gives his paintings a sculptural quality that engages viewers on multiple levels. Particularly interested in capturing light's changing interaction with the world, his expressive oil compositions are both evocative and dramatic. Jason deliberately plays with extreme textures through impasto techniques, creating intense lighting effects that interact boldly with abstracted images of sky, sea and land.
Architectural Elements in Nature
Jason has a particular fascination with how buildings and structures punctuate the natural landscape, producing dramatic backdrops for the ever-changing elements. Bridges, monuments and historic buildings frequently feature prominently in his work, often rendered in dreamlike fashion with bold colors. He spends considerable time exploring landscapes in all weather conditions, constantly inspired by the dynamic quality of light and atmosphere that these unique locations provide. Through his textured approach and vibrant palette, he effectively echoes the vitality of the Scottish elements.
Jason's Professional Journey
Since 1997, Jason has served as Director of Art and Design at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh, balancing his educational career with his artistic practice. His work has been shown in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Oxford, London, and Lisbon, with representation by several prominent galleries including Graystone Gallery and Torrance Gallery in Edinburgh. Jason has completed large commissions for office spaces, hotels, and restaurants across the UK, Hong Kong, Portugal, and the UAE. In 2024, he was honored with an Artist in Residence position at The Royal Scots Club in Edinburgh, further cementing his reputation in the Scottish art scene.
