From East Lothian, Andy is a painter, film maker, printamker and preformer.
Andy Cumming is a Scottish artist based in East Lothian whose practice spans painting, printmaking, film and performance. He studied Fine Art Printmaking at Gray's School of Art before completing an MA in Fine Art Printmaking at Edinburgh College of Art.
His work explores human creativity and our instinct to construct meaning through images, drawing on nature, existentialism, mythology, psychology, alternative histories and internet conspiracy culture. Across these subjects is an interest in how people make sense of experience: how we find patterns, form beliefs and create meaning in the face of uncertainty. More recently, his practice has also turned towards artificial intelligence and what the increasing automation of image-making might reveal about the nature and value of human creativity.
Andy has exhibited at institutions including the Royal Scottish Academy, National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh Printmakers and Mall Galleries, London. In 2018 he presented the multidisciplinary project Adam Linklater: Mythopoeia as part of Edinburgh Art Festival. He has received the Royal Scottish Academy Printmaking Prize and the Royal Scottish Academy Edinburgh Printmakers Award, and his work is held in the University of Stirling Art Collection.
