Projects Undertaken
Adam Linklater: Mythopoeia - 2014-2018
A four-year multidisciplinary project culminating in Adam Linklater: Mythopoeia, presented as part of Edinburgh Art Festival in 2018 at Maritime Lane Collective, Edinburgh.
The project centred on the creation of Adam Linklater, a fictional occult artist, shaman and alternative researcher. I developed and inhabited the persona over several years through costume, performance, photography, film, mixed-media artworks and an online presence, presenting the resulting body of work as though Linklater were an independent artist.
The project explored the artist as mythmaker and the ways images, narratives and apparent evidence can construct identity, meaning and belief. Through social media, Linklater developed a following, with members of the audience engaging with the persona as though he were a real individual.
The project culminated in an exhibition bringing together Linklater's supposed artworks, video and sound performances, alongside the first public screening of my experimental film Origins. During an artist talk held as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival programme, I revealed that Linklater was a constructed persona and discussed the four-year process behind the project and the ideas surrounding mythmaking, identity and belief that informed it.
