'Noticing how extraordinary the ordinary can be and a genuine sense of wonder are at the heart of my paintings and drawings.'

Jane attributes a great deal of value to travel and on-foot explorations when it comes to her creative process. She takes these opportunities to sketch on location and engages with her surroundings in this way to grow a deeper visual understanding of place. The sketches are then taken to her studio as references where she uses a wide range of different media to interpret the subject matter, particularly focusing on landscape within the compositions.

She enjoys finding contrast within her paintings. She finds particular interest in places where soft and atmospheric nature meets the small detail of human habitation. This allows for an effect on the canvas though brushstroke that mirrors that of the world around her, for example using gestural mark-making alongside linear detail. She makes a point of finding elevated vantage points during her on-site explorations so that she can observe this contrast between the natural and man-made through a view that encompasses all the elements of the location that she is interested in.

She finds herself interpreting and reinterpreting certain landscapes many times, experimenting with how atmosphere and mood can make a place distinctive. This experimentation is grounded in building layers of mixed media until she has exposedthe place and its fitting mood within the. This experimental layering is integral to her practice.
