Nerine Tassie's "Summer Trees by Spey" evokes the tranquil majesty of Scotland's iconic river landscape through masterful mixed media techniques. This substantial work (110 x 110 cm framed) captures a solitary tree standing sentinel beside the flowing waters of the River Spey. Tassie employs a rich palette dominated by deep, luminous blues that give the water an almost mystical quality, contrasted with the earthy greens and browns of the surrounding landscape. Her approach balances representational elements with expressive, atmospheric qualities—creating depth through layered media and gestural marks. The composition draws the viewer along the winding river path, while the dramatic sky suggests changing weather patterns so characteristic of the Scottish Highlands.

The Scottish Landscape Reimagined
Hanging in a room, "Summer Trees by Spey" creates an immersive portal to one of Scotland's most cherished natural environments. The substantial square format gives the work a commanding presence that transforms a wall, while the balanced composition provides a sense of both drama and serenity. Tassie's contemporary interpretation of the Scottish landscape tradition speaks to our enduring connection with wild places, particularly the vital waterways that have shaped both the land and its cultural identity. The artwork's atmospheric quality shifts subtly with changing light throughout the day, reflecting the ever-changing nature of the landscape it depicts.
