Jenny Matthews is a Scottish painter exhibiting internationally who seeks out colour and light in her work.
Since graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 1986 with a degree in Drawing and Painting, Jenny has been a professional artist exhibiting around the UK and abroad. She is known for her colourful and sensitive watercolour depictions of flowers and plants, both cultivated and wild, and her town and cityscapes.
The weather, the seasons and the time of day provide an ever-changing palette and an ever-changing resource for ideas: Jenny uses these colours and effects in her paintings to create mood and atmosphere and to conjure up a sense of a place. Flowers are a theme which has been central to Jenny's work over her career and she has a fascination for their ever-changing colours and forms. Whatever her subject, Jenny seeks out colour and light. This, together with the unpredictable qualities of watercolour, are the essence of Jenny's work.
As a passionate exponent of watercolour, Jenny has been involved since 2017 in the leadership of the Scottish group of artists at the international watercolour convention in Italy, FabrianoinAcquarello.
Jenny is a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW) and has been shortlisted for the 'Marche d'Acqua' international watercolour biennial prize in 2016 and 2022 in Fabriano, Italy. She has won 2 prizes at the Royal Watercolour Society in London (2007, 2015) and a prize at the Paisley Art Institute (PAI) (2026).
As well as regularly exhibiting in galleries around the UK and working to commission, Jenny also teaches regular private classes, occasional workshops and gives watercolour demonstrations to art clubs.
