These glasses were a gift for Rose's birthday from someone who knows she enjoys painting antique glass. They're called toasting glasses because they're designed to allow a host to have many toasts without getting inebriated, because the glass is double thickness, giving the impression of a full glass, though it's just a thimbleful! Rose painted them in fading light, next to a scrap of linen from a canvas. They were barely visible against the plaster wall and Rose embraced the challenge of capturing the subtleties of tone.
