Ben Lucas is a British painter who is interested in conveying emotions by the natural landscape.
Ben Lucas creates evocative paintings that capture the ocean's ever-changing character, transforming his deep connection with the sea into powerful artistic expressions. His work distills memories and experiences into paint, seeking to convey movement, energy, and transcendence while providing viewers space to engage with their own emotional responses. Rather than depicting specific locations, Ben's art aims to evoke feelings, using ocean and sky as metaphors for the vast spectrum of human experience.
Intuitive Creative Process
Ben's artistic approach is guided by intuitive responses to landscapes, balancing controlled, deliberate techniques with spontaneous expression. His paintings move between these states while maintaining focus on the emotional resonance of each scene. Every piece undergoes a process of distillation to its essential elements, allowing the paint to communicate with immediacy and energy while leaving room for personal interpretation.
Distinguished Artistic Heritage
Ben comes from a family with strong artistic roots. He is the grandson of Mary Norton, author of the children's classic "The Borrowers," and Colin Lucas, a pioneering modernist architect who received an OBE for his work. Colin was a member of "Unit One," the British modernist artist group founded by Paul Nash. Ben's siblings have also pursued creative careers—his brother Joe Rush founded the Mutoid Waste Company, while his sister Fanny Rush is an accomplished portrait painter. His work has been exhibited extensively in solo and group shows across galleries in the UK and Australia, with paintings held in private collections and financial institutions worldwide.
