Natural spaces and forms provide the basis and inspiration for Nerine's work.

Nerine Tassie, born in Fife and a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art in 2002 with a Fine Art degree, draws profound inspiration from the natural landscapes surrounding her home. The coastal waters and woodland areas, with their ever-changing and sometimes intimidating character, provide endless subject matter for her artistic exploration. Through her work, Nerine seeks to capture the mysterious essence of these natural environments while creating a powerful sense of atmosphere and connection to place that resonates with viewers.

Creative Process and Techniques

Nerine employs various layering techniques in her creative process, combining digital compositional work with diverse paint media. She embraces the physicality of painting, experimenting with different base materials to develop unique experiences within each artwork. Through pouring, layering, absorbing, and mark-making, she creates richly textured surfaces that give each piece its own distinctive quality and presence.

Compositional Exploration and Recognition

The relationship between composition and fragmentation or framing is a key aspect of Nerine's artistic investigation. She continuously experiments with this balance to create greater depth of focus for viewers, enhancing their engagement with each piece. Her artistic achievements include winning the Landscape Artist of the Year award in 2015 and completing a residency at The Cill Rialaig Project in County Kerry, Ireland in 2016. Nerine has exhibited extensively throughout Scotland and beyond, with numerous solo and group exhibitions at prestigious galleries including the Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh, Gallery Heinzel in Aberdeen, and Frames Gallery in Perth.
