Amanda has won awards in both architecture and in painting and was the first tutor to teach in both the School of Design and the School of Fine Art at ECA.

Amanda Phillips brings a unique perspective to landscape painting, informed by her distinguished career as a chartered architect and educator. Originally trained as a painter, she qualified with a First Class Honours degree in Architecture and worked on high-profile buildings before returning to full-time painting, focusing on buildings and landscapes in various media.

Dual Expertise

Amanda taught at Edinburgh College of Art and Edinburgh Napier University for over a decade, becoming the first tutor to teach in both the School of Design and the School of Fine Art at ECA. Her work has been recognized with awards in both architecture and painting, reflecting her exceptional ability to bridge these creative disciplines.

Distinctive Approach

Amanda's paintings explore atmospheres and acoustics in the landscape, seeking to capture not just visual aspects but the soundtrack of places. She often incorporates tartan paper or graph paper into her work, where grid patterns enhance visual complexity and reflect her architectural background. Working spontaneously with mixed media—including paint, gesso, charcoal, pastel, printed paper, and pencil—she creates layered surfaces that invite viewers to discover something new with each viewing.
