What Makes Her Work Unique
The Tension Between Chance and Control
Judith's artistic practice centres on exploring the interplay between intentional making and unpredictable outcomes. Working with traditional hand-building techniques of pinching and coiling, she creates forms that evolve organically through the process. Porcelain demands patience and careful treatment, qualities that align perfectly with her methodical, experimental approach. Each piece begins with embedded textures pressed into the clay, creating the distinctive rippled surfaces that define her work.
After firing, Judith applies pigments prepared from high-quality sources, then washes them back to reveal the underlying texture. This layering process creates remarkable depth, with colours settling into crevices and highlighting raised surfaces. The unpredictability of how pigments respond to the textured clay surface means each piece develops its own unique character. The final stage involves sealing with wax, sometimes inlaying it within holes and indentations to complete the piece. The effect is remarkably tactile: smooth yet textured, inviting touch whilst commanding visual attention. Her palette of ocean blues, sea greens, and turquoise echoes the colours of Scottish waters, creating an unmistakable sense of place. -
"Judith's ceramics embody the elemental relationship between water and land that defines Scotland's coastline. Her work captures something essential about our coastal character, translating natural processes into forms you can hold in your hands. Each piece carries the memory of tides and time."

Spotlighting Judith Davies at Graystone Gallery
-
We're drawn to artists who connect contemporary practice with Scotland's natural landscape, and Judith's work exemplifies this connection beautifully. Her ceramics bridge the gap between functional pottery traditions and contemporary sculpture, creating pieces that appeal to collectors across both disciplines.
What makes Judith's work particularly compelling for our collection is its accessibility combined with its sculptural integrity. These aren't precious objects that demand reverential distance; they invite interaction and contemplation. The organic forms and coastal palette make them versatile additions to contemporary interiors, whilst their sculptural quality ensures they command attention as standalone pieces. -
Her exhibition history demonstrates sustained engagement with the Scottish art community. From solo shows at respected venues like the Bluecoat Design Centre in Liverpool to participation in Visual Arts Scotland exhibitions at the Royal Scottish Academy, Judith has built a reputation for consistently excellent work. We're proud to represent an artist whose practice embodies both technical mastery and genuine connection to Scottish coastal heritage.
