What Makes Kirsty Doig’s Work Unique
Intuition and the Spirit of the Subject
Kirsty’s creative approach is guided by intuition. She works to prise out the spirit of each subject, often exaggerating certain anatomical features or personality traits to heighten the viewer’s emotional connection and stretch the imagination of what we perceive. A hare’s ears might be elongated to emphasise its alertness. A dog’s posture might be subtly shifted to amplify its character. These are deliberate choices that move her work beyond the decorative and into something more alive, more felt.
Much of this approach has its roots in Kirsty’s study of human and animal psychology, which has informed her practice throughout her career. She is fascinated by consciousness, by the interconnectedness of living beings, and by the way we as humans project onto and empathise with other species. Her sculptures carry what she describes as subtle anamorphic tendencies, qualities that encourage us to see ourselves reflected in the animals she creates. It is this emotional intelligence, this sense that each sculpture understands something about the creature it represents, that gives her work its distinctive warmth and resonance.
From Clay to Bronze
Kirsty trained in Ceramic Sculpture and Design at Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art in Dundee and spent over twenty years working primarily in ceramics before moving into bronze. That transition was driven partly by collector demand and the durability bronze offers for outdoor display, but also by her own creative evolution. The discipline of working in clay, with its organic qualities and its capacity for spontaneous, fluid form-making, remains fundamental to her process. She often works without an internal armature, allowing the sculpture to develop intuitively rather than being constrained by a predetermined structure.
The patinas Kirsty applies to her finished bronzes are among the most distinctive elements of her work. Rich green-brown surfaces carry the appearance of age and weathering, as though the sculptures have been shaped by the same elemental forces as the landscape around them. These surfaces are not merely decorative but integral to the meaning of each piece, suggesting history, endurance and the quiet beauty of natural processes acting upon material over time. Combined with the fluid, rugged textures that characterise her modelling, they give each sculpture a presence that feels both ancient and entirely contemporary.
“Kirsty’s bronzes carry a quality of life that goes beyond representation. Her intuitive approach captures something essential about each creature she sculpts, creating works that connect us to the natural world with warmth, energy and a deep sense of empathy.”

Born in Angus, Scotland, Kirsty trained at Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art in Dundee, graduating in Ceramic Sculpture and Design in 2000. She has exhibited across Scotland, England and Spain for over two decades, with private collections held in all three countries. Her years spent living in Spain and the Balearics broadened her creative horizons, but it is her return to Scotland, to the Angus Glens near the Cairngorms, that has most profoundly shaped her current practice. The wildlife and landscape of this extraordinary part of Scotland provide both her subject matter and her sense of creative purpose.
