Maps and Memories, Exploring the nature of journeys and manifestations of remembrance
'Maps and Memories' composes memory recording and map-making into an emotive document of time.

Maps and Memories is an exhibition dedicated to capturing elements of the past, present and future. Featuring the work of Lindsey Lavender, John McClenaghen, Ella Williams, Kerry Souter, Poppy Cyster and Gary Anderson, this exhibition dives into what maps and memories mean to them.

EXHIBITING ARTISTS

Each artist takes a unique route to the exploration of Maps and Memories. Through metaphor, record keeping, semi-abstract landscapes and cityscapes, the themes of remembrance of the past and foresight into the future are apparent.

- Ella Williams captures dreamy visions of the past, embodying the liminal space of the mind between past and present.

- Kerry Souter creates a map of the past through abstract mixed-media painting.

- Lindsey Lavender makes a map of her life through a vivid visual language that puts the city she lives in at the centre.

- John McClenaghen weaves together a painted tapesty of memories made vivid from his mother and her siblings family, who passed on stories of the farm they grew up on.

- Gary Anderson documents his time lived in Edinburgh after moving away, manifesting a feeling of connection to place in his work.

- Poppy Cyster uses colour in her semi-abstract sky-scapes that evoke a sense of belonging drawn from her unique childhood as an aviator's daughter.

A Journey, a memory, and a destination

Together, these artists communicate what it means to exist in a state of voyage, while considering the  feeling of being connected to the past. Maps and Memories invites you to engage with this idea of transience, and to acknowledge the very human experience of existing in multiple places and times within the mind.
