Between the coast and the sea is a dance of stability and change
They court, turn and kiss where permanence and transience interact.
The coast serves as a boundary, a warning where the land meets the ever-changing expanse of the sea. Each meeting is charged with a sense of awe and wonder. The coast offers a vantage from which we observe the infinite horizon, curating curiosity and a yearning for exploration. Waves crash rhythmically against the shore, evoking a sense of calm and continuity, a reminder of nature's enduring cycles.
In literature and art, the coast and the sea have been immortalized as symbols of emotional states-tranquillity, turmoil, longing, and adventure. Kerry Souter's work captures the essence of their relationship: a dynamic, ever-evolving interplay that is both beautiful and poignant. The emotional connection between the coast and the sea reflects our universal human experience, one of connection, transformation, and the eternal search for balance.
In this show, Kerry is joined by ceramicists David Binns, Judith Davies and Sue Mundy. David's practice involves a direct and intimate involvement with the material exploring both the vessel and the glaze. Judith is drawn to edges, curves and the particularities of detail in textures making her work extremely tactile and each piece unique. Sue's close observations of trees and bones come together to inform the textural qualities and the meticulous details within each of her pieces.
A Kiss of the Sea is a major exploration of Kerry's influences and inspirations. Concepts of contemplation and freedom are widely represented through textures and infusions of light. Through this uplifting one woman show, we encourage you to stand at the edge of the land with us, warmed by the sun and caressed by the sea.
