'Immersion / Resonance is a pair of mixed-media paintings inspired by nature, reflection and the experience of becoming absorbed in looking.
The works move between landscape and abstraction. Areas suggest water, vegetation, reflected light and distant forms without settling into a fixed representation. Influenced in part by Impressionism, the paintings are concerned less with describing a particular place than with capturing the sensation, atmosphere and memory of experiencing one.
Their surfaces develop intuitively through repeated processes of addition, disruption and revision. Sawdust, spray paint, acrylic paint pens, chalk and oils create contrasting textures and marks that accumulate, are obscured and reworked, allowing unexpected events within the process to influence the final images.
There is also an existential dimension to the diptych. I am interested in the way meaning can emerge through experience rather than being fixed in advance. The paintings develop through choices, accidents and material resistance, while their ambiguous imagery asks the viewer to participate in the same process: to look, interpret and form their own associations.
The diptych also reflects a wider question within my current practice: what does it mean to make a physical image in the age of artificial intelligence? Against the speed and apparent effortlessness of digitally generated imagery, these works deliberately retain evidence of their construction - touch, time, uncertainty, accident and change.
The titles Immersion and Resonance refer both to our experience of the natural world and to the internal response an image can provoke: becoming absorbed in an experience and the way that experience can continue to reverberate afterwards.' Andy Cumming
