She invites the viewer to feel a sense of melancholy, confusion, sentiment, or nostalgia.
Ruby's paintings co-exist between digital and physical, real and unreal. Encompassing a dystopian narrative within her practice, each work has its own central character or focal point giving the painting its own energy through her intrinsically vivid colour palette. Documenting castaway objects found on streets, they are then painted as the protagonists in her work. In addition to these found objects, her use of spray paint and portrayal of displaced pictorial spaces evidently depict eerie urban settings.
Influenced by film, her physical surroundings, and those around her, imagery from her environment usually informs the subject of her work. She invites the viewer to feel a sense of melancholy, confusion, sentiment, or nostalgia through her paintings. Turning to different movements such as Surrealism, Expressionism, and Realism for reference, she is particularly interested in the contradictory nature of painting surrealist imagery in a realist manner.
