Stephen has been immersed in wild places for most of his life and career.
Stephen feels compelled to paint landscapes because of the sense of awe they inspire in him, but also because painting them allows him to see the world more clearly and to deepen his understanding of himself.
As an artist and an ecologist, Stephen has spent much of his life in the wild and remote places of Scotland and beyond. His paintings are deeply rooted in those experiences, weaving together intuition, memory, direct observation and emotional response to create images that evoke the spirit of those precious places. He is enthralled by the freedom to play and experiment with watercolour, embracing both its spontaneity and its unpredictability. Through his expressive watercolours, he invites his viewers to reflect on their own memories, emotions, and personal connections to the landscape.
