Working mainly from life and sketches, Sophie creates paintings that evoke a sense of positivity through everyday objects.
Sophie lives in Penzance and works in a small studio at home as well as a larger studio above the Daisy Laing Gallery.
Her colourful work is inspired by Milton Avery, Mary Fedden, William Scott, Klaas Gubbels, Etel Adnan, Ken Done and Matisse. Working mainly from life and sketches with the occasional photo, she paints and prints small moments from her life in far West Cornwall: a collection of inspiring objects in the home, seasonal fruit and flowers, fresh fish from Newlyn, a morning spent on the beach or a stroll through a local Cornwall garden.
She primarily paints with acrylic and occasionally oil on canvas, linen or ply. By concentrating on the essence of objects and scenes she creates feelings of joy, escapism, calm and stillness with a strong focus on celebrating the small and simple joys in life using colour to evoke positive emotions.
