Louise Lacaille is a painter whose work explores curiosities within natural and earth sciences.
Based in her Edinburgh studio, she is drawn to those subjects that lie at the edges of perception or
comprehension: fleeting phenomena, strange lifeforms, and subjects whose scale or complexity
makes them difficult to observe directly. These offer the greatest opportunity for ambiguity and
creative interpretation, allowing elements of abstraction, mark-making and scale to become
paramount. A graduate of Camberwell College of Art & Design (2008), Lacaille has long been
preoccupied with the materials and processes of oil painting. Much of her work emerges from a
desire to hone or experiment with a particular technique, allowing process to guide outcome.
Her paintings seek to evoke the sense of wonder or calm we may experience when encountering
fragile, easily overlooked phenomena of the natural world – the moments that verge on the magical.
