Catherine Sargeant is a Welsh-born multidisciplinary artist based in Scotland who creates distinctive paintings, prints, and installations centered on text and language. Fascinated by the inherent beauty of words and how we are saturated with communication in everyday life, she creates works that simultaneously calm and question the viewer.
Artistic Foundation
Catherine graduated as a mature student from Edinburgh College of Art during its Centenary year in 2007, when she became the first recipient of the WASPS New Graduate Award, providing her with studio space at Patriothall in Edinburgh where she continues to work. She now divides her time between this Edinburgh studio and a small croft studio on the edge of a sea loch in Wester Ross.
Creative Practice
Working in series across various scales and surfaces—from robust slate to fine handmade papers—Catherine employs multiple layers of calligraphic marks using oils, acrylics, pigments, and inks. Her practice incorporates both conventional writing and asemic writing, a form of gestural, quasi-calligraphy that allows for infinite interpretations, creating works with exciting surface tension and inherent ambiguity.
