Sue's sculptural forms are inspired by her enjoyment of the natural world.

Sue Mundy is a ceramic artist specializing in hand-built sculptural forms, creating one-off pieces from her studio near Reading, Berkshire. Working predominantly with white stoneware clay, Sue employs traditional methods of slabbing and hand coiling to bring her artistic vision to life. Her sculptural forms are deeply inspired by her close observations of the natural world, particularly trees and bones, which inform the textural qualities and meticulous details found within each piece.

Artistic Process and Inspiration

Sue's work with clay provides her a secondary voice—a means of communicating through form rather than words. Using hand-building techniques, she creates bottle-like structures that are repeatedly scraped to reveal organic openings. In her sculptural works, deliberate junctions emerge by detaching and re-joining the outstretched necks, where distinctive collars and shoulders evolve. A significant shift in Sue's practice reflects her focus on purely aesthetic considerations over functional aspects.

Professional Journey and Recognition

Sue's relationship with clay began during her school years, eventually leading to direct entry to North Staffordshire University where she specialized in ceramics. Throughout her career, she has exhibited extensively across the UK at prestigious venues including Contemporary Ceramics London, Cambridge Contemporary Art, and Ceramic Art London.
